Inflation and monetary policy

The inflation measures the Fed watches

The FOMC considers price, labor-cost and expectations measures. Its longer-run 2% inflation objective is measured by the annual change in the headline PCE price index. Core and trend measures help assess persistent pressures. Federal Reserve: the PCE inflation target.

Open the official data links below for charts, observations and release dates. These links complement the saved indicators in this tool; readings are maintained by the linked publishers.

1. Policy benchmark: PCE

BEA’s chain-weighted PCE index reflects changing spending patterns and purchases made on households’ behalf, including employer-paid health care.

2. Early signals and producer costs

BLS: CPI and PCE differences.

3. Compensation and wages

4. Underlying inflation trends

5. Inflation expectations

Expectations can influence wage and price setting. Markets and household surveys capture different perspectives.

Read the units before comparing. PCE, CPI, PPI and ECI links show index levels; hourly earnings shows dollars per hour. Year-over-year growth is 100 × (current level ÷ the level one year earlier − 1). Monthly annualized, year-over-year and expectations rates describe different horizons. The linked trimmed and median series already report year-over-year percentages.
